Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The city of Playa del Carmen is hoping to add four more beaches to its Blue Flag list. Lourdes Vargas Ocampo, head of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone (Zofemat) for Solidaridad mentioned the city’s intention for next year.
She said that for 2022, the municipality is hoping to have four more beaches qualify for the Blue Flag status. During her interview with Capital Noticias, she said that beaches such as Xcalacoco, Punta Esmeralda and Calle Ocho were successfully renewed of their Blue Flags for 2021, passing all 30 requirements to do so.
Among safety and cleanliness of the beach area itself, Blue Flag qualifications also require beach areas to have facilities such as bathrooms and showers, information modules and warehouses.
In 2022, Vargas expressed the city’s intention to certify more beaches, but did not name potential candidates.
