Yucatan wakes up to single-digit temperatures

Abalá, Yucatan — Several municipalities in the state of Yucatan woke up Wednesday to single-digit temperatures with the entry of another cold front, making it the coldest day of the new year.

A majority of the state woke to unusually cool temperatures, however, residents in the southern municipalities of Abalá and Oxkutzcab started their day with an 8 C (46 F) degree morning. La Comisión Nacional del Agua (Conagua) reported the low figures after the arrival of Cold Front 29 hit the northern Yucatan Peninsula.

In Tantakín and Tzucacab, also in southern Yucatan, the second lowest temperatures of 9 C degrees were recorded, while residents of Mocochá and Motul faced a 10 C degree morning. For other areas, the thermometer marked 11 C degrees in Peto and Conkal, 12 C in Ticul and Cantamayec and 13.5 C in Muna.

Residents in the capital city of Mérida woke up to a 14.1 C day. According to the National Meteorological Service, Cold Front 29 will leave the region Thursday.

In January of 2019, several southern Yucatan the areas including Oxkutzcab, Mocochá and Abalá registered wake-up temperatures of 7 C (44 F).
