Young fisherman drowns at Punta Esmeralda

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A young man who went missing over the weekend has been found washed up on a local beach.

On Saturday morning, a young man went into the sea in the northern part of Punta Esmeralda beach to fish with two others. The small group were using an atarraya, a throw-style of fishing net for their catch. According to the two friends, the third man seems to have suffered a physical attack, disappearing into the water and quickly carried away by the current.

Civil Protection and elements of the Municipal Police were called to the beach area to search for the man. Water activity personnel from nearby Paradisus Hotel also helped look for the young fisherman.

On Sunday, a passerby called Emergency 911 reporting a body on the beach. Authorities arrived to carry out the corresponding investigations and subsequent removal of the body, whom they suspect to be the missing fisherman. The area was cordoned off by municipal police.
