Cancun, Q.R. — A federal police officer who was shot to death Friday night in a residential region of Cancun was barely three months on the job.
The federal officer has been identified as 27-year-old Hugo Rafael Peña. Police say that Rafael Peña was serving with the anti-drug division of Cancun when he was shot. He had apparently just moved to the area and had been on the job for less than three months.
Police say they had lost communication with their young comrade at nightfall and discovered his body, bound at hands and feet, at 11: 15 p.m. that night. They reported finding nearly a dozen 9 mm caliber shells at the scene.
Rafael Peña is one of several Cancun police officers shot in the line of duty already this year.
