Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A woman walking to catch the bus was attacked by a purse-snatcher in central Playa del Carmen.
The unidentified woman says she was walking to catch a bus to go to work at around 4:40 a.m. when she was attacked by a man who tried to steal her purse. The attack occurred on 1st Street South and 30th Avenue in the city’s center.
Seeing the woman walking alone, the man intercepted her, demanding her purse and threatening her with a knife. When she refused, he became upset, throwing her to the ground and punching her in the face.
The woman says she dropped her purse and began screaming for help. A nearby taxi driver heard her screams and called Emergency 911. Police arrived to question the woman. An ambulance was called to tend to her injuries.
Police say the attacker was approximately 25 year of age. They searched the area but were unable to find him.
In May, Playa del Carmen police warned women about walking alone during early morning and late night hours due to a string of violent acts.
