Cancun, Q.R. – A woman has died after being hit by a boat at Cancun’s Playa Tortugas.
The accident occurred Friday morning when a woman, who was training for the upcoming Cancun-Isla Mujeres swimming competition, was hit in the head after swimming outside the safety of the marked buoy zone.
The captain of the boat rushed the injured woman to the Playa Linda pier where they were met by paramedics, however, the woman was pronounced dead.
At 9:00 a.m. Friday, emergency 066 received the call of a deceased woman at the Playa Linda pier. Tourist Police officials as well as harbormaster personnel were on scene when paramedics determined the woman was without vital signs.
According to the boat captain, the boat departed the pier at Playa Linda and was heading toward Punta Cancun, but did not see the woman swimming in the water. It wasn’t until he felt an object hit the front of the boat that he saw the woman had been injured by the propeller. He immediately rushed her to the Playa Linda pier where she was pronounced dead.
The boat’s captain, a 49-year-old man from Leon, Guanajuato, was arrested and taken to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
