Water gun creates social media hype that results in police at Cozumel school

Cozumel, Q.R. — A video circulating on social media this week caused great stir at a highschool in Cozumel when a student is seen with a gun.

David Domínguez Povedano, deputy director of the Cozumel highschool Luis Álvarez Barret, said that on Monday, police arrived at the school in response to a 911 call that a student was seen in a video with a gun.

The video, which was posted by the student, was quickly hyped by social media comments when a student is seen pulling out a water gun and fellow classmates running away to avoid getting wet. From this, state police agents arrived.

They were able to identify the student in the video and went to the campus to check his belongings which is when they found the water pistol. Domínguez Povedano pointed out that the young man’s actions caused the confusion generated on social media.

While he says the actions of the young man caused the arrival of police, he also criticized the situation being magnified on social networks.

“You have to be aware of what goes on in networks, especially if you do not know for certain what is happening. It is better to go to the authorities and have them investigate,” he said.
