VW creates a remodeled version of their old Kombi van with a new electric model.
The company says the new electric version called I.D. Buzz will be released after the I.D. Compact four-door, which they’re expecting in about five years.
Herbert Diess, CEO of the German manufacturer says, “This vehicle joins the past with the future as well as Pebble Beach with Silicon Valley,” noting that the VW has always been part of the California lifestyle.
The remodeled Kombi as they’re called in Mexico, or Bulli as it’s known in Germany, will have more interior space thanks to the rear axles being mounted further apart, providing a larger wheelbase. The vehicle looks like a compact model on the outside, although it offers the interior space of a large model. The result is a superior package, offering both driver and passengers enough space for a comfortable trip.
With a length of 4.9 meters and width and a height of 1.9 meters, the new concept offers extraordinary dimensions. The production version, based on new fully electric architecture, will incorporate many concept design ideas that will also feature variable seating, interactive connectivity and automated driving.
The new model will hit the road in 2022, however, there are no plans as of yet to produce a camper version. VW said the electric van will be aimed at customers in North America, Europe and China. There will also be a cargo version of the van.
