Volunteers remove tons of seaweed from Xcacel-Xcacelito turtle sanctuary

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Environmentalists and volunteers spent the day clearing seaweed from the beach area of Xcacel-Xcacelito.

More than 40 people from Tulum and Playa del Carmen gathered to help clear the sargasso from the Xcacel-Xcacelito Sea Turtle Sanctuary. The sea weed removal was organized by the environmental civilian association Moce Yax Cuxtal.

Guadalupe de la Rosa, member of the environmental group, said that a total of 42 people gathered to help collect two trucks of three tons each from just the Xcacel-Xcacelito front.”

Those who participated said that the removal was not massive, but that it’s important to keep the area clear to prevent the turtles from getting caught up and stuck in the seaweed, adding that the sand also needs to be clean to encourage the adults to arrive and spawn.

Members of Moce Yax Cuxtal along with the Secretariat of Ecology and Environment are encouraging the public to help with the removal of sargasso. The state of Quintana Roo has been granted 62 million peso to remove the algae that lies along the coastal areas.
