Cozumel, Q.R. — Over the last two weeks, more than a dozen unexpected cruise ships have made their way to the island of Cozumel to wait out bad weather.
Alicia Ricalde Magaña, director general of the Integral Port Administration of Quintana Roo (Apiqroo), says that for the days of September 10 to 17, seven more cruise ships have requested unscheduled docking privileges on the island due to recent hurricane activity.
She also noted that during that previous week though, four cruise ships meant to dock Cozumel were forced to cancel for safety reasons. Two ships from Disney Fantasy and two from Norwegian Escape were unable to dock on their scheduled September 6 and 7 days.
From September 4 to 10, the island had already seen 24 cruise ships, of which only 17 were scheduled. Unexpected visitors included ships from Allure of the Sea, Carnival Magic, Carnival Glory, Carnival Conquest, Carnival Splendor, Norwegian Escape, MSC Divine, Carnival Paradise and Harmony of the Seas.
Ricalde Magaña said that of the additional cruise ships that arrived at Cozumel, Carnival Vista, Carnival Glory, Oasis of the Seas and MSC Divine requested berthing for more than one day.
She anticipates more unscheduled cruise ships could arrive in coming days.
