United States Geological Survey reports unusual 4.6 earthquake north of Holbox

Holbox, Q.R. — State Civil Protection says the USGS recorded an unusual 4.6 magnitude earthquake north of Holbox. The state agency says the quake was recorded by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) late Saturday night approximately 252 kilometers north of Holbox in the Gulf of Mexico.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 13.04 kilometers. The National Seismological Service referenced the island of Holbox as the closest point from the epicenter.

On social media, Quintana Roo Governor, Carlos Joaquin, posted “An earthquake of 4.6 Richter degrees was recorded 252 kilometers north of #Holbox, at a depth of 13.04 kilometers in the Gulf of Mexico. @ProtCivilQROO reports that there were no damages in this unusual seismological event.”
