Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — For a second time, the proposed Underwater Museum of the Caribbean has been rejected by local authorities.
Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) has again denied permits for the construction of the the Museum of the Caribbean Sea, a private project by company Thetys. The project was submitted to environmental authorities at the beginning of the year, with the Environmental Impact Manifest (MIA) submitted for public consultation over the summer.
After review, the project has again been denied. Permits for construction of the underwater museum were also denied at the end of last year when the project was first proposed to state officials.
The Museum of the Caribbean Sea was proposed for the front of Mamitas Beach in central Playa del Carmen. The project would have consisted of 19 sections with 50 structures beginning 600 meters off the coast and extending one kilometer out.
Environmental groups were not in favor of the project, including members of Moce Yax Cuxtal, who encouraged the public consultation.
