UK studio to design pavilion for Mexico’s Feria Internacional del Libro

An announcement by the British council confirmed that the award-winning London architectural studio, Carmody Groarke, will be the company to design the UK pavilion for this year’s Feria Internacional del Libro (FIL) in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Carmody Groarke’s pavilion design will have to accommodate a large range of uses including exhibition space, a retail area for book selling partners, an informal area for music and literary events as well as a business area for publishers.

Organizers of the event have chosen the UK to be this year’s guest of honor as part of a bilateral enterprise to “build, strengthen and celebrate the growing connections” between the two countries.

Many UK writers will head to Mexico for the festival and use the pavilion as their base. Architectural designers Kevin Carmody and Andy Groarke said, “we see this as an opportunity to make the UK pavilion a centerpiece for congregation, exhibition and debate within the book fair.”

Director of Architecture, Design, Fashion at the British Council, Vicky Richardson, said, “we were impressed by Carmody Groarke’s inspired response to the brief, which relates sensitively to the context of the Book Fair and also proposes a bold, flexible structure.”

Feria Internacional del Libro is the largest literary festival in the Spanish-speaking world. It is being held from November 28 to December 6, 2015.
