Cancun, Q.R. — Uber service for Cancun remains uncertain as the mobility law is still not approved and stand-by employees are no longer being paid.
It has been three months since the suspension of Uber’s car service for Cancun, which they company said they agreed to believing a new mobility law would be passed within the first few months of the new year.
However, those three months have come and gone and the company says there is still no new law that allows them to operate in Cancun.
In a statement, Uber says “The pause was because we believed that the new mobility law would be ready in three months.” However, the first quarter of the year has passed and legislation is still not approved. Uber service for the main tourist destination in the country sits stagnant.
While the company was left waiting, they paid employees a weekly salary and also trained them in anticipation of beginning work again in April. Uber operator Raymundo Villaseñor Contreras is one of the affected drivers and says, “While we did not work, we received training courses and Uber deposited 2,450 peso a week to us.”
He says that the Uber offices are still open but he has not received his usual deposit from the company hoping the delay is due to Holy Week. More than 100 people were affected by the company’s sudden service suspension.
Uber began offering their car service in Cancun in September 2016, which according to the Law of Transit for the state, was done so illegally. They agreed to a temporary suspension in December of 2017.
During that period, more than 300,000 people used the service, of which 60 percent were national and international tourists. However, disputes with local the taxi drivers was ongoing with two deaths — one Uber driver in 2016 and one Cancun taxi driver in 2017 — and at least 12 assaults being filed by Uber drivers.
