Two women drown laying wreaths for Day of the Dead

Acapulco, Guerrero — Two women have drowned while placing wreaths to honor their dead during Dia de los Muertos in the El Morro beach area of Acapulco.

The accident occurred November 1 when police say they received a 911 call about 4:30 p.m. from a man who said he had taken the two women to a nearby island to lay wreaths for Day of the Dead. Once they reached the island, the man said both women removed their life jackets and entered the water.

Unable to save them, the man summoned for assistance. Officials from the Eighth Naval Region began rescue efforts, making their way toward the island where they found both women who had already drowned.

The names of the women have not been released, however officials did say that one of the deceased was approximately 60 years of age. The bodies were sent to Semefo for claiming.
