Two visitors to Playa del Carmen die from gas explosion

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — UPDATED: Two Argentinian tourists who received burns from a gas explosion Friday have died.

The two women, identified as 31-year-old Vanesa Diaz and 29-year-old Nadia Urbizaglia, died Saturday from the injuries they sustained in a gas explosion. The two women, who were visitors to the area, had been renting a vacation apartment in the city’s center since October 17.

The explosion inside the apartment occurred at 7:00 a.m. Friday when authorities were called to 20th Street in the city’s hub. Firefighters arrived on scene to put out the flames, while paramedics attended to the two women who were found with second and third degree burns to more than 80 percent of their bodies.

They were rushed to hospital where Nadia died Saturday and Vanesa passed away early Sunday morning.

Civil Protection says the explosion appears to have occurred from an unlit pilot lite, however the investigation is still underway. The protection agency says there was a gas buildup inside the apartment from an open source, which led to the explosion.
