Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Two men have been arrested in Playa del Carmen for attempted extortion against a local downtown business.
The Attorney General’s Office has reported that they have arrested two male persons identified as Raúl N and Gerardo N, who were imputed for the crime of extortion.
The pair were arrested after a local downtown business reported their repeated attempts at gaining extortion money. The restaurant owner filed a complaint saying on at least three accounts, the two men entered the 10th Avenue restaurant demanding 20,000 peso per month.
The pair claimed to be working for a criminal group, threatening the closure of the restaurant if the extortion money was not paid. The extortion demands first began February 14. Staff at the restaurant reported the incidents to authorities who were able to track down and arrest the pair two days later.
Federal Police agents arrested 23-year-old Raúl N and 43-year-old Gerardo N. They appeared before a judge Saturday. Their hearing has been set for February 22.
