Two former Puerto Morelos officials charged with embezzlement

Puerto Morelos, Q.R. — Two former municipal officials of Puerto Morelos have been charged with embezzlement in the amount of 28 million peso. The Anti-corruption Prosecutor’s Office charged the former president of the Puerto Morelos municipal council, Leonel Medina Mendoza and former treasurer, Edgar May May, for the diversion of 28 million peso.

Both former officials were charged with the same offenses within the terms established in article 256 of the Penal Code for the Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo.

During their trial, lawyers for the former public officials argued that the money was the result of business contracts with legal companies, however, prosecutors were able to show those companies were fictitious.

In additional to assets being seized, both men were outfitted with electronic ankle bracelets.
