Two drown off Mazatlán beaches over Easter long weekend

Mazatlán, Sinola — Lifeguards in Mazatlán reported nine water rescues in one afternoon that left two swimmers dead. The busy long Easter weekend saw Mazatlán beaches packed with people, some of whom, were swept out to sea.

Members of the city’s Municipal Police Aquatic Rescue Squad provided assistance to swimmers who were dragged by sea currents. However, two deaths during their rescues were reported.

According to information from the Mazatlan Police, a 34-year-old man identified as Eduardo N from Jalisco drowned off Playa Brujas. He was removed from the water and transferred to hospital where he died.

Lifeguards at Playa Brujas rescued five others that same day due to the strong currents and high waves.

The same afternoon, rescue personnel were activated in the Olas Altas area with the water rescue of a 13 year old girl. She too, was provided with medical attention on the beach before being transferred to hospital, but was nonresponsive and pronounced dead.

Both victims were tourists to Mazatlán for the Easter holidays.
