Two Cancun traffic officers suspended after physical assault

Cancun, Q.R. — An investigation into the physical assault of a motorcycle driver by Cancun police has been ordered by the city’s new mayor.

Municipal president María Elena Lezama Espinoza ordered an investigation into the two traffic agents who were recorded physically assaulting a motorcyclist in Region 92. Witnesses to the assault say that a motorcycle carrying two people was stopped by police because the driver was not wearing a helmet.

However, the traffic stop, which took place Monday night, quickly turned into a physical assault which was recorded and released on social media Wednesday. The video shows two police officers physically assaulting the driver of the motorcycle with one of the officers holding him to the ground with a knee on his neck.

The driver of the motorcycle was let go after neighbors began to arrive and outnumber police.

Secretary of City Council, Jorge Aguilar Osorio, said that on instructions from the municipal president, the incident will be fully investigated and that the results of the investigation will be released. The two traffic agents have been suspended until the investigation is complete.
