Two Cancun traffic cops suspended after bribe accusations

Cancun, Q.R. — Two Cancun police officers are under official investigation for allegedly trying to bribe a couple.

Two traffic policemen from the municipality of Benito Juárez are being investigated by the Directorate of Internal Affairs of the Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety and Traffic after a video surfaced on social media showing the two officers conducting “bad practices”.

A local woman posted a video she recorded after claiming two police officers stopped the car in which she was riding and requested 150 peso instead of being issued a ticket.

Her video shows a non-Mexican man, who was the driver of the car, sitting in the police cruiser while the woman records the conversation. In her video, you can clearly hear her repeatably ask for the ticket while the policeman says “I am gladly giving him attention without having to pay nothing to me here, I am not charging him at any time.”

The agency of Benito Juárez has since issued a statement saying they will not tolerate this type of bad practice that denigrates the image of the corporation.

The agency also reported that during the investigation, both police have been suspended from their duties until an official verdict is determined.
