Two arrested in Cancun moments after violent robbery

Cancun, Q.R. — Police in Cancun arrested two men responsible for robbery with violence late Sunday.

Elements of the municipal police of Benito Juárez in joint operation with the Gendarmerie, were able to capture the two almost immediately after their robbery.

According to the Municipal Secretariat of Public Safety and Traffic, a report of gunfire in Region 259 was made to emergency 911 around 9:30 p.m.

Benito Juárez municipal police quickly arrived in the area and proceeded to look for suspects. Two of the alleged suspects were arrested, but not before one tried to escape by running through a green space.

Police were able to catch and detain both. While municipal police were arresting the men, members of the Gendarmerie also arrived and began a physical search of the area. Lying in a green area, they found a hand gun. Nearby, they found a vehicle.

Both the gun and the car were reportedly involved in two previous crimes from February 14 and May 11 respectively.

The two were transferred to the facilities of the public prosecutor. One of the arrested men had an outstanding arrest warrant from the state of Campeche where he is allegedly wanted for robbery and homicide.
