Turtle tour groups turned away at Akumal Bay

Tulum, Q.R. — Groups of tourists led by guides were prohibited from entering Akumal Bay to swim with the turtles.

On Tuesday, inspectors from the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (Profepa) from Playa del Carmen went to Akumal to prevent tourists from swimming with turtles outside the permitted hours.

Tour guides from Cancun, Playa del Carmen and other points of the state had arrived with groups of tourists to Akumal Bay to perform the turtle swim, but were prevented by federal inspectors from entering the water since it was already past 5 p.m.

Municipal police officers were called to the bay to diffuse tempers after several of the tour guides expressed their dissatisfaction with Profepa officials.
