Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – A 17-year-old male lost his life to drowning yesterday at a local Playa del Carmen cenote.
The accident occurred at 4:00 p.m. Monday at las Torres cenote when two young men were swimming under the influence of alcohol.
According to the second male, Marco, Jose Tito dove in for a swim but began to experience problems staying afloat. Seeing his friend in trouble, Marco dove in to try and help but began having trouble swimming so he dragged himself out of the cenote and ran to his nearby home for help.
By the time he returned to the cenote, Jose had drowned, although area fire fighters made it to the scene and tried to revive the young man.
Municipal police cordoned off the area. The body was found floating two hours later and removed by Scuba Libre.
