Tourists caught in middle of dispute

Puerto Aventuras, Q.R. — A dispute over a tariff increase resulted in several tour companies being blocked from entering the town of Puerto Aventuras, leaving tourists caught in the middle.

Román Rivera Torres, president of the marina that many tour companies use for their clients, reportedly increased company user fees by 200 percent. The companies affected by the access restriction were Paradise Catamarans, Fatcat, Capitan Ricks, Pro Dive and Walter, for apparently not complying with the unannounced increases.

For nearly an hour, the five companies arrived at the Puerto Aventuras gates with clients, only to be denied access by private security personnel. Municipal Police officials arrived at the entrance along with legal representatives. Eventually, all vehicles were given permission to pass, but not before creating a long line of traffic at the gates.
