Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – As tourism increases in the Cancun-Riviera Maya region, area tourist police are being enrolled in English language classes.
Since many of the region’s police arrive from other parts of Mexico, they are without the common second language, something that makes communicating with tourists difficult.
Tourist police are being taught English on a daily basis at Casa Consular, providing the region with bilingual officers. Other elements of the police service, such as the gendarmerie, are also being encouraged to sign up for English language classes.
The classes are offered to elements of the police free of charge. Francisco Lopez Reyes, general director of Municipal Tourism, says that it’s important that all police that have contact with tourists have the basic English language skills.
