Tourist dies in Playa del Carmen highway accident

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A tragic accident that occurred along the Federal Highway left one dead and 20 injured when a bus rear-ended a combi.

The accident occurred in an area known as Punta Venado when a Playa del Carmen-Tulum combi stopped for a passenger. That stop led to the 40-passenger staff bus rear-ending the combi van.

The fatal accident involved a public transport van belonging to the Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Union and a Unico Hotel staff bus. The impact caused the combi to be pushed up the highway, where it crashed into an electric pole.

The pole cracked at its base, cutting electricity to a portion of the region for about six hours while emergency personnel cleared the accident and Federal Electricity Commission personnel restored the damaged pole.

In the accident, one female combi passenger, a Mexican tourist, was killed when she was thrown from the van. She died on scene. In total, 20 were injured from both vehicles. The deceased woman has been identified as Denisse G.A., a Riviera Maya tourist from Guadalajara, Jalisco who was traveling with her husband, Andrés C., who is on the list of injured people in the accident.
