Tourism and spending numbers up for Cancun, Riviera Maya

Cancun, Q.R. — Foreign tourism and spending has increased already this year over figures from the same time in 2015.

Data from the Ministry of Tourism shows the arrival of foreign tourists in Mexico grew 10 percent during the first quarter of 2016, however, the country as a whole was placed ninth in the reception of international tourists according to World Tourism Organization.

The data also shows beach destination preferences to be Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The fourth week of July marks the largest surge of visitors to the country as both domestic and international travelers head to Mexico for summer holidays. This year, tourism trackers have also recorded an increase in spending, up from 2015.

Statistics show a rise in spending from $383 US per day in 2015 to $405 US per day in 2016. This is the time of year when the Mexican Caribbean is filled with mostly domestic visitors, but many North Americans make their way to Cancun and the Riviera Maya during the summer months. The Mexican Caribbean is also a popular summer destination with Argentinians, Colombians and Chileans.
