Three killed in accident meters from Playa del Carmen police filter

Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — Three people were killed Sunday night meters from the northern federal police filter of Playa del Carmen. The accident was reported just before 10:00 p.m. along the highway when a public taxi and private SUV collided.

Reports say the deadly collision happened when the SUV began to slow as it approached the federal filter, however, the Cancun taxi, which was behind, did not and crashed at a high rate of speed into the back of the SUV. Due to a day of heavy rains, the impact from the hit caused both vehicles to spin and land along the roadside.

Police officers from inside the security filter made the 911 emergency call. Three people are reported to have been killed in the accident, two from inside the taxi and the third, unknown. One other person was transferred to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

Municipal police officers were on scene along with forensic medical personnel for the removal of the bodies. So far, only the driver and front seat passenger of the taxi have been identified among the deceased.
