The Mexican Association of Travel Agencies celebrates 42 years

Cancun, Q.R. — The work of travel agents committed to Cancun has been a key element in the growth of our tourist destination, said Municipal President, Remberto Estrada Barba, on Friday during the 42nd anniversary of the Mexican Association of Travel Agencies of Quintana Roo.

The current mayor said that 85 percent of travelers arriving in Cancun and Riviera Maya do so thanks to the work of the agency, adding that in Quintana Roo there are more than 40 companies that play a fundamental role in tourism promotion.

“Imagine Cancun 42 years ago when the association was founded. Just six years earlier it had begun the transformation from a fishermen’s resting point into a majestic tourist destination. There were about 20,000 people who lived in that small city, where at the time, there were less than 2,000 hotel rooms,” he noted.

Today, tourism in Cancun represents more than 32,000 direct sources of work for the municipality and more than 128,000 indirect ones. In 2017, we received over 6.8 million tourists, more than 15 percent above 2016, for the 36,000 rooms in operation.

We continue attracting investments, he said adding that for the first half of 2018, more than 1,600 new hotel rooms have been opened saying that the work of travel agents committed to Cancun has been a key piece in the growth of the tourist destination.

Estrada Barba also acknowledged the contribution of engineering professionals to the development of Cancun, stressing that over the city’s 48 years, they have contributed to the development of one of the most prosperous cities in the country and one of the most important tourist destinations in the world.
