Cancun, Q.R. — Terminal Four of the Cancun International Airport is being prepped to open as Terminal One is gradually closed.
Expected to begin closing in October, Terminal One is currently being analyzed to see what can be done with the existing infrastructure.
Alejandro Rosel Ramírez, of the relations department at the Cancún International Airport explained, “The idea is to close terminal one in a gradual way by first operating terminal four. Once they close T1 we will do a reconfiguration of the airlines from terminal two to terminal four.”
Rosel Ramírez says that the complete changeover is not an easy process because it involves more than furniture and paint, but the technology and work systems for each airline. It is a job that will take between two and three month in each area, so total time could be anywhere from six months to a year, however they are expecting terminal four to be in operation between October and December.
Once complete, the new terminal will cater to both domestic and international flights with a capacity of approximately 9 million passengers a year.
