Taxi drivers of Tulum protest limited park access with highway blockade

Tulum, Q.R. — Taxi drivers of the Tiburones del Caribe syndicate partially block the federal highway heading toward the Tulum Hotel Zone and National Park Monday in protest of their limited access to the national park.

Members of the Tiburones del Caribe union intermittently blocked the coastal road Monday morning in protest against new rules of La Comisión Nacional de Áreas Naturales Protegidas (Conanp).

Dozens of taxi drivers began lining the highway on both sides around 9:30 a.m. as they placed large red traffic cones across half of the highway. The group were protesting the limited park entry being put into place for taxi drivers.

Tulum taxi drivers are hoping representatives of Morena in Quintana Roo will allow them to again work within the Tulum National Park Tulum after members of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) demanded that they withdraw from the area, saying the taxi drivers were affecting traffic as well as the natural environment of the area.

According to a bill signed in the middle of the year, only 23 taxi drivers are permitted entry to sites assigned by the interior of the Plataforma Nacional de Transparencia.
