Playa del Carmen, Q.R. – The Olympic pool at Playa del Carmen’s Instituto Municipal del Deporte (Municipal Sports Institute), will be free of charge beginning Monday.
As of August 24, the usual 400 peso fee to use the pool will be waved, making the use of the pool to the local public free.
Carlos Toledo Medina, head of the sports institute, explained, “It’s part of the innovations we have. Before we charged a fee of 400 pesos for youth and adults but beginning Monday, it will be free.”
The pool is used by more than 500 children and adolescents who are part of the local swimming school. They use the pool daily from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and again from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. During these times, the pool is not open to the public
For now, the swimming school is not offering classes until the children return to school next week.
“On Monday, the swimming schools begin classes. There are about 500 students registered in Playa del Carmen and another 350 students from Puerto Aventuras. We are hoping for a general growth, but we won’t know until we start activities,” he said.
The Municipal Sports Institute is also hoping to refurbish the soccer fields in the Poliforum with synthetic grass. As they are now, the soccer fields are in poor condition for sports.
