Cancun, Q.R. – A surprise storm hit Cancun Wednesday afternoon, then proceeded to make its way down the Riviera Maya coast.
Although rain was forecast for the region, strong winds accompanied by stronger wind gusts took the region by surprise. Many central Cancun streets suffered severe flooding while winds were strong enough to break branches, and in some instances, blow over trees.
City traffic was brought to a near stand-still for several hours as high waters made main arteries impassable.
Some area residents experienced minor damage to homes. There were no reported deaths or human injuries. By early evening, the massive thunderstorm had made its way down the coast of the Riviera Maya, drenching the towns of Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen.
There have been rumored reports that the initial Cancun storm was a tornado, however, local meteorological authorities have not made that confirmation.
