Sunbathing tourist dies from lunging jet ski

Cancun, Q.R. – A Mexican tourist has died following a freak jet ski accident at Riu Cancún América.

The accident occurred on November 10 when a tourist was hit by a ski jet that lunged out of the water onto a sunbed on the hotel’s beach. The tourist, who was sunbathing on a cot, was hit by the watercraft and rushed to a private hospital with severe head injuries where he died five weeks later.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, the accident occurred when a runner from the company, Scuba Caribe, parked a jet ski on the beach but lost control when he hit the throttle, causing the machine to lunge ahead several meters onto the sunbather.

The accident was reported by the company that owned that watercraft as well as hotel security, the harbormaster and local tourist police. The employee of the company responsible for the out-of-control watercraft fled the scene and is currently being sought by State Judicial Police (PJE) on charges of manslaughter.
