Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Strong winds over the weekend caused havoc in many parts of Cancun and the Riviera Maya including at least one auto accident.
As temperatures cooled off, strong winds made their way into the region followed by a downpour of rain. Nearing midnight on Sunday, winds became strong enough to dislodge a large sign from above the Cancun-Playa del Carmen highway at Puerto Morelos, causing it to fall into traffic.
Although no one was injured, the sign did manage to cause major damage to an oncoming truck. Firemen along with Civil Protection were first on scene to help release the vehicle from the fallen sign with the help of tow trucks.
Due to its height, the sign took out several electrical cables causing a temporary outage.
