Strong winds cause port closure to small vessels at Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — Due to continued strong winds, the port authority at Isla Mujeres has restricted nautical activities to boats under 40 feet.

The captain of Puerto de Isla Mujeres, Ana Laura Lopez Bautista, said that due to the current tropical wave, weather conditions remain favorable for strong winds and high seas. She explained that even though there is no forecast chance of development for a tropical storm or hurricane, general precautions have been taken for navigation.

She says that the ports are not closed to larger boats, however, activity has been suspended for smaller vessels including whale shark tours and trips to Isla Contoy and fishing, as well as recreational activities within the bay.

She said that for the course of the afternoon and night, a considerable increase in the wind is expected, which is why smaller vessels are being temporarily restricted.
