Stranded dolphin on Cancun beach suffers shark bites

Cancun, Q.R. – An injured dolphin was seen stranded in shallow waters along the beach of Kilometer 5 in Cancun’s Hotel Zone on Sunday.

The dolphin was spotted by passersby who notified authorities. The Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa) arrived on the scene where they found a wounded dolphin lying in shallow water.

Profepa quickly notified the staff at Dolphin Discovery who rushed to the scene to rescue the seriously injured mammal. Dolphin Discovery in-house veterinarian, Roberto Sanchez, said the species of dolphin was a bottlenose and that the dolphin was suffering from multiple shark bites.

Authorities accumulated at Playa Langosta on Kukulcan to evaluate the physical condition of the dolphin and to determine the best way to transfer it for medical attention.

In April of this year, Civil Protection discovered a stranded dolphin at Kilometer 13 in Cancun’s Hotel Zone. That dolphin was also rescued by Dolphin Discovery. It was taken to their facility for a medical evaluation where it was determined it had poor vision. The dolphin was named Maya and returned to the sea.
