Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — A handful of people helped push a stranded dolphin back out to sea Wednesday after the mammal apparently became stuck on sand.
The stranded dolphin was spotted in front of the Reef Hotel in Playacar. Several people rushed out into the stormy waters to push him back out into the sea.
After a few moments, the mammal was free and able to head out into open water.
The director of Environment, Orquídea Trejo confirmed the situation with the dolphin, noting that while the stranding did not last long, it is thought the strong currents and large waves of the past week from Tropical Wave 3 may have played a factor in his being pushed toward shore.
Rivera Maya has seen a string of heavy thunderstorms hit the region since Tuesday. Forecasters are predicating several more days of heavy wind and rains.
The incident was recorded on video by local agency, Radio Formula Q.R.
