State auditor finds over 50 million in losses from Isla Mujeres public account

Isla Mujeres, Q.R. — A state audit of the books belonging to the previous administration of Isla Mujeres has found over 50 million in losses. According the an audit by the Superior State Audit Office (Aseqroo), they found more than 50 million peso of improper payments for public lighting projects in the Continental Zone.

An investigation has been launched into the improper payments found between 2019 and 2020, during the time Juan Carrillo Soberanis was mayor. Aseqroo (Auditoría Superior del Estado) has already ordered the initiation of sanctioning processes regarding the public account losses.

The agency reported the auditing of 35 projects, six of which, had missing and irregular documentation. During their audit, Aseqroo reported finding some projects with underpayments while others were found with excessive overpayments.

According to the report, there were three meetings between the auditors and City Council staff. “As a result of the review, alleged damage is determined in the Public Treasury for an amount of 50,455,471.19 peso”, they said.
