Spray of bullets in central Cancun leaves two dead, three injured

Cancun, Q.R. — A spray of bullets in central Cancun has left two dead and three injured in a parking area at the Soriana supermarket across from the city’s ADO bus terminal.

Witnesses reported the shooting around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when two men on a motorcycle apparently began shooting at a man in SM 2 between Tulum Avenue and Uxmal.

According to the 911 emergency report, several people were reported injured by gunfire. Municipal and state police were quick on scene followed by ambulances.

The injured have been identified as 43-year-old René N, 25-year-old William N and 29-year-old Leonel N. Also injured was 40-year-old Ingrid N and 27-year-old Abigail N, who received a bullet wound to the head.

All injured were transferred to hospitals for treatment. Abigail, who was rushed to IMSS, has since died from her injuries. She was the wife of one of the injured men, 29-year-old Leonel N. They were originally from Puebla.

He said he was walking with his wife when he heard the shots. They tried to run but he felt his leg was injured. That was when he noticed his wife lying on the ground.

Members of the General State Prosecutor’s Office arrived to take over the investigation along with personnel from the Forensic Medical Service for the removal of the body of the man.

The official identity of the deceased man is not known. It is not known if he was one of the listed injured. Police have not released any possible motive for the attack.
