Rosaura Villanueva Arzápalo, head of the Special Prosecutor’s Office in Combat against Corruption, says that of the 21 former officials, they range from the former secretary of the government to the former municipal president of Solidaridad, Mauricio Góngora Escalante.

Of the confiscated properties, a hotel in the Cozumel Hotel Zone with a value in excess of 150 million peso was part of what they have been able to reclaim so far. Aside from properties, more than 198,000 square meters of land was recovered in Mahahual, which she pointed out, was voluntarily returned by 90 percent of those who acquired it irregularly in the previous government.

Land in the Cancun Hotel Zone has also made the recovered list.

Roberto Borge Angulo, former state governor and Mauricio Góngora Escalante, former mayor of Playa del Carmen, both remain in separate prisons after being arrested for numerous crimes while in public office. Former Borge lawyer, César González Melgarejo, was also arrested in July after admitting himself to a Cancun hospital under a false name.
