South of state hit hardest by forest fires this year

Riviera Maya, Q.R. — Forest fires continue to devour areas across the state with the south being hardest hit this year.

According to la Comisión Nacional Forestal, the municipality of Othon P. Blanco is the most affected by forest fires this season having already lost 3,400 hectares to fires. Tomás Sánchez Cabrera of la Comisión Nacional Forestal said that fighting fires this year has been complicated since the rate of fires continues to increase due to the lack of rain.

He explained that there are three fires active around the state of which two are located in Othón P Blanco in the Botes of Mahahual and the other on the outskirts of Cancun, noting that fire had little impact, burning approximately 10 hectares.

Sánchez Cabrera said that although some rain has been reported around the state, it’s been of little help since most of the fires are started by the hand of man.

He added that so far, fires have been registered in Othón P Blanco, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José María Morelos, Solidaridad, Isla Mujeres and Bacalar.
