Solidarity starts new garbage separation program

Playa del Carmen, Q.R — The municipal of Solidaridad has begun the promotion of a new garbage separation program.

Households will soon be able to separate more garbage by the type of waste such as food (fruit and vegetable peels), glass, paper, plastic and cans so garbage can be correctly applied as organic, recyclable or non-recyclable waste.

While general garbage will still be taken to the landfill, citizens will be able to recycle more options by going to city green points.

“Solidarense we invite you to participate. Remember that the actions we carry out individually have an impact. If each one of us is integrated, we will reduce the amount of garbage that is channeled to the landfill and solve an ecological problem for the benefit of our children and of those who live in this beautiful place,” said municipal president Cristina Torres Gómez.

The new Esta en tus manos (It’s in your hands) program will begin August 5 at which time citizens will be able to recycle waste by type. The new program on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays will collect organic waste. On Tuesdays, paper, cardboard and glass bottles will be collected. Thursdays are reserved for the collection of plastic and cans. All recycle days will be from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. expect Saturdays which will operate from 7:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The program was created from citizen participate forums, Que Hable Solidaridad (Let Solidarity Talk) in which a resounding percentage of residents requested the municipality implement a collection program by the type of waste. The program is part of the Plan Municipal de Desarrollo (PMD) 2016-2018.
