Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — The first day of October began the new collection of a tax on tourists visiting the municipality of Solidaridad.
According to City Council, the new Environmental Sanitation Law tax, which was originally announced as being 20 peso per person, has been reduced to 10 peso per person for hotel bookings for the rest of this year. Starting next year, however, the original 20 peso per person fee will be charged.
A trust for the new tourist tax was generated last month. City Council reports that “On September 26, 2017, the constitution of the trust was formalized in Scotiabank Inverlat, SA Institución de Banca Múltiple.”
However, Andrea Lotito, vice president of the Hotel Association of the Riviera Maya, says that although the trust has finally been established, it is not clear who has been integrated into the trust.
“The municipal government has shared all the tools needed to pay the tax. It is a requirement to collect under the constitution of the administration trust, but we are waiting for clarification to see the names of all participants in the private sector,” he said.
City Council says that monies collected for the Environmental Sanitation Law will go toward the maintenance of natural resources offered throughout of the municipality. The tax was approved under the Tax Law of the State of Quintana Roo.
