Small amounts of sargassum arriving along Costa Maya beaches

Mahahual, Q.R. — Sargassum has begun accumulating along some Costa Maya beach areas without any brigades to remove it. An area between Mahahual and Xcalak is slowly beginning to see an accumulation of the seaweed, however, the municipality has yet to organize removal brigades.

For this reason, some volunteer businessmen have started the removal on their own since neither the Othón P. Blanco City Council or the Secretary of the Navy has dedicated anyone to the task due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The removal of the smaller amounts arriving now will help eliminate the accumulation of large amounts later, as well as prevent the unpleasant smell of decay.

In recent days, virtual meetings have been held between authorities including the Secretary of the Navy, who coordinates the sargassum combating efforts, and Governor Carlos Joaquín González. While forecasts anticipate less sargassum than last year, officials around the state are preparing for the arrival of what is expected.
