Shooting at Kilometer Zero of Cancun Hotel Zone leaves two injured

Cancun, Q.R. — A shooting at the entrance of the Cancun Hotel Zone has left two injured.

The Municipal Secretariat of Public Security reported that around 4:15 p.m., a Yucatan-plated car was fired upon numerous times by two men passing on a motorcycle.

Due to the bullet impacts, the driver lost control of the car and smashed into a light post in the central ridge of Boulevard Kukulkan at Kilometer Zero of the hotel zone.

The call to emergency 911 by witnesses and other motorists resulted in the arrival of municipal, state and federal police as well as the Ministry of National Defense and members of the Mexican Navy.

Preliminary reports say the car was several times by 9 mm caliber bullets. At least one of the bullets penetrated the windshield, hitting the driver in the chest. His passenger was also injured. They have been identified as 25-year-old Argenis TM and the passenger, 36-year-old Wilberth NO.

Both were taken to hospital and listed as critical with an unknown degree of injuries.

Witnesses said that after the car crashed, the two gunmen fled on foot in different directions. One headed toward Ceviche and boarded a taxi while the other ran in the direction of Tamajar.

Authorities collected 10 shells in the area but did not find the weapon(s) used.
