Semarnat publishes protection agreement for Holbox beach area

Holbox, Q.R. — The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) published an agreement that will see beach allocated to Conanp. In a statement, the federal agency said the Agreement by which 785,864.81 m2 of beach surface is allocated to the service of the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp) maritime zone, federal maritime-terrestrial zone and land reclaimed from the sea, has been made official.

The Agreement was published in Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) that will see the land protected. Semarnat stated that “the Agreement allows carrying out actions for the protection, conservation and sustainable management of its resources in accordance with the provisions of the management program of the Yum Balam Flora and Fauna Protection Area where this island is located.”

They added that “with this publication, Semarnat continues the work to protect the environment and complements and harmonizes with the determination published on June 1, 2021, on a destination agreement granted to Conanp for an area of 33,128.71 square meters, made up of four polygons, located on Isla Grande de Holbox.”

Through the General Directorate of the Federal Maritime Terrestrial Zone and Coastal Environments, Semarnat will monitor strict compliance with this and all agreements on the matter, within the scope of its powers, in addition to working with the social, environmental and business sectors to define a protection strategy.

In their statement, they said the Government of Mexico endorses its commitment to protect these areas for the benefit of Mexicans and therefore, no area has been or will be delivered to private interests and emphasizes the importance of caring for our natural wealth, because by caring for the fauna , the flora, the air, we take care of ourselves and our common home for the well-being of present and future generations.
