Playa del Carmen, Q.R. — La Secretaría de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Semarnat) has officially approved one of the largest tourist projects for Riviera Maya in recent years.
A massive hotel complex has been given the green light by Semarnat officials who have approved private company, Valentín Playa del Secreto, to begin construction on beachfront land north of Playa del Carmen.
The mega-tourist project will involve more than 13 hectares of coastal land and 4.2 billion peso for the construction of another 1,599 rooms for tourist complex Playa del Secreto Hotel and Resort.
The project dates back to 2005, when conditional authorization was granted for the construction of a series of complexes of which only one was built, Valentín Imperial Riviera Maya. Constructed in 2007, the 540-room hotel will now see the addition of the other complexes as it moves forward with the construction of the rest of its project.
According to the project description, the next phase will be “Hotel 2 with 745 hotel rooms and 75 employee housing units equivalent to 150 rooms and Hotel 3 with 704 rooms. In total, the project in all its stages will be 2,139 hotel rooms.”
It is one of the largest projects and with the largest investment announced for Riviera Maya in recent years, said Wilberth Gutiérrez Álvarez of Riviera Maya Investment.
Along with the construction of the parks and hotels of the Amikoo complex, whose investment amounts to $840 million USD, Riviera Maya is one of the destinations that more hotel investment will be attracting between 2018 and 2020, he added.
He also says that the various residential projects that are under construction from Puerto Morelos to Tulum are also part of the economic boom that Quintana Roo is experiencing as a result of its success in the tourism industry.
The remainder of the project will be constructed in the northern portion of the municipality of Solidaridad in the vicinity of the municipality of Puerto Morelos.
