Search and rescue mission for Cancun man comes up empty handed

Cancun, Q.R. — UPDATED: Cancun search and rescue teams came up empty handed at the end of the day on Wednesday after searching for a man in a cenote. Rescue members from the Cancun fire department, Civil Protection, police and Red Cross spent a portion of the day at a cenote in Region 225 of the city after the report of a man entering the water.

The man, who is an area local, was reported by his family members to Emergency 911 services after they said he went swimming around 8:00 p.m. in the water-filled cavern. The site, which is marked by a protective perimeter fence, was said to be frequented by the now-missing man.

At the end of Wednesday, there were no reports of rescue personnel locating the man his family has identified as 49-year-old Onesimo N. His shoes and clothing were found at the site. A search, which resumed at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, continues.
